 Many beautiful colors and textures woven together form a TAPESTRY just as they make up the fabric of our diverse society. Each thread, each individual, adds its own unique purpose, but when intertwined with others, the strength and the beauty are magnified.
The American ideal is to be a pluralistic society in which people of different backgrounds can live and work in harmony, joined by the common bond of being citizens of the United States. But racism and prejudice are serious issues in America. Individuals may face discrimination because of sex, creed, national origin, age disability, or socioeconomic status. There are some common causes of these prejudices: misunderstanding, lack of knowledge, misinformation, insecurity, and fear of differences.
The fundamental goals and beliefs of Girl Scouting challenges us to work toward the ideal where all Americans live in harmony together. Valuing human life in all its diversity is the core of pluralism.
It is our hope that the activities in the tapestry membership program will strengthen self-esteem through building a positive sense of racial, ethnic and cultural identity as well as develop an acceptance and understanding of differences in our council and our society. Our goal is a membership rich in, and enriched by, its diversity - a magnificent Girl Scout tapestry.
Brownie, Junior, Cadette, and Senior Girl Scouts can earn the Tapestry patch. It is our hope that by completing this program, girls will develop a positive sense of racial, ethnic, and cultural identity as well as develop an acceptance and understanding of differences in our council, our community, and our society as a whole.
