Tennis is the Sport of a Lifetime!

North Carolina Girl Scout Tennis PatchComplete six of the following activities, including the two marked with an asterisk(*).

1. * Learn the five basic strokes of tennis in the USA Tennis 1-2-3 class or similar series of beginner tennis lessons. The five basic strokes are:

  • Forehand Ground Stroke
  • Forehand Volley
  • Backhand Ground Stroke
  • Backhand Volley
  • Serve

2. * Learn how to keep score, the basic rules and court etiquette.

3. Explore the history of tennis and write a one-two page paper.

  • Which countries is it popular?
  • What are the Grand Slam events?
  • What are the different types of tennis court surfaces?
  • Who are some past or present tennis stars?

4. Learn how to select, use, and care for your tennis equipment and clothing.

  • Visit a sports store or use a sports catalog to learn more.
  • Check out tennis.

5. Learn about a touring player or tennis star.

  • How did they get started in tennis?
  • What is their world ranking?
  • What other interest do they have?
  • What makes them great?
  • Watch them play a match in person or on television

6. Interview a tennis teaching professional or someone who works in tennis.

  • How did they get into business?
  • What are their job responsibilities?
  • What do they like most about their job?
  • Try to spend part of day observing what they do.

7. Interview High School or College tennis players.

  • When did they start playing?
  • How much did they practice?
  • What they expect to gain from tennis?

8. Learn what injuries may occur in this sport.

  • Learn and demonstrate First Aid for at lease two of these injuries.
  • List or discuss safety tips or steps to prevent these injuries.
  • Consider the weather conditions.

9. Attend or volunteer in the running of a tennis tournament.

  • What is done to organize this event?
  • How are the players organized to play and what is the format?
  • How are matches scheduled?
  • What prizes are awarded to the players?

10. Play in a USA Team Tennis or Rallyball League in your community.

11. Volunteer at a local tennis program or event.

  • Ask your Community Tennis Association how you can give back to your community through tennis.
  • Assist at the registration desk to check-in players or post match scores.
  • Collect racquets to be donated.
  • Teach younger children basic tennis skills
