Required Training for Leaders
Persons approved for Girl Scout Leadership must receive orientation within the first six weeks and Basic Leadership Training within the first six months of beginning leadership responsibilities. If Basic Leadership Training is not completed within three months, at home training must be completed with three weeks of that time to continue as a troop leader. (Council Policies and Procedures II).
Orientation is an introduction to Girl Scouting in the Catawba Valley Area. Among the topics covered are, registration procedures, that FIRST PARENT MEETING, where to find help, Council Policies and Procedures, and sample troop meetings. Orientation is designed to help the leader get stared having a safe successful troop. It does not take the place of BLT I and II.
Basic Leadership I
Basic Leadership I is required of all Leaders. In this general course, the leader is introduced to basic health and safety principals in Safety-Wise, the council structure, important Girl Scout days, overall planning for the troop and a brief history of Girl Scouts. Basic Leadership II is also required of all Leaders.
Basic Leadership II
Basic Leadership II is divided into program levels. A Daisy Leader would take Daisy Training, a Brownie Leader, Brownie Training and so on. BLT II focuses on program. A Daisy Leader would learn how to do the Daisy Program, the Junior Leader, the Junior Program, etc.
First Aid Training
First Aid Training is required for many activities in Girl Scouting. Troops involved in those activities must have a certified First Aider present or a doctor, nurses, paramedic or EMT. Instructors are certified by American Red Cross or American Heart Association (CPR only).
Troop Camp Training
Troop Camp Training certifies a leader to take a troop on an overnight camping trip staying in cabins, platform tents or in pitched tents. The course covers program activities, safety considerations, and basic outdoor cooking and camping skills. This is a hands on training.
Troops going troop camping must accompanied by an adult who holds a current Girl Scout certification in Girl Scout Troop Camping and who has studied the proposed campsite (Council Policies and Procedures III).
